Experience Future Safety Tech: TOPPAN’s 3D ToF Camera Opens New Possibilities

This article introduces a demonstration of person detection and gesture recognition utilizing our 3D ToF Camera, the senSPure™ C11U. This demonstration accelerates the realization of a society where robots and people can coexist safely.

Real-Time 3D Data Acquisition with 3D ToF Technology

Machine vision camera systems and conventional 3D sensing systems like, stereo vision, and LiDAR could detect the presence of people and objects or measure partial distances, but they struggled to accurately capture the complete three-dimensional motion and shape of an object. Their accuracy was also often compromised by the surrounding environment.
Our 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera simultaneously captures 3D data, including depth information, along with 2D image data in real-time. It also has durability to ambient light, allowing for reliable use indoors, outdoors, or even in the dark. A key strength is its ability to precisely capture moving objects without motion artifact and motion blurring.

This technological superiority allows for the following specific applications:

• Safety sensors in factories and autonomous mobile robots:

  When a person enters a dangerous area, such as a machine’s operating range, the sensor detects the distance between the person and the robot in real time, avoiding collision risks. It can also be mounted on robots, allowing for accurate measurement of the surrounding environment without motion blurring, which enables safe autonomous navigation for industrial robots.

• Machine control and activity recognition via Gesture

By accurately recognizing hand and body movements as 3D data, it enables “gesture recognition” for operating machinery without physical contact and using in employee behavior analysis. This dramatically improves work efficiency and safety in cleanrooms and hazardous areas.

This demonstration was publicly showcased at Manufacturing World Tokyo in July 2025, at the Stanley Electric Co., Ltd. booth. The high level of interest from numerous visitors underscored the strong demand for this technology.
